Qs and As on Ramadhan by Al-Kharousi Questions on Ramadhan by Sheikh Said bin Khalaf Al-Kharousi (Assistant Grand Mufti of the Sultanate of Oman) Q: In religious terms, which is better for a Muslim travelling in Ramadhan, fasting or breaking fast? A: He or she has a choice to fast or to travel without fasting, but fasting is better, as per a certain verse in the Holy Qur’an. Q: If a fasting person happens to eat or drink forgetfully, is her/her fasting cancelled? A: If you eat or drink forgetfully while fasting, you have been fed by God and your fasting is complete. Q: Tell us about Zakah al Fitr (material religious obligation in the form of money or food given to the poor in the end of Ramadhan) A: Zakah al-Fitr is a duty that you perform on your behalf and on behalf of all your dependants, including your children and parents if they are poor and you have to support them. The approximate value of Zakah al-Fitr is a Saa (a measure of capacity equal to filling both hands put together) of food from what you usually eat in Ramadan. Q: About Zakah al-Fitr, shall I donate it if my father gave on behalf on me and my children? A: You need not donate Zakah al-Fitr since your father has already done that on your behalf, though the merit in that goes to him. Q: Can an able person replace fasting with feeding in Ramadhan? A: No, you are not allowed to replace fasting with feeding because fasting is a wajib or religious duty, according to the Holy Qur’an. Feeding is compensatory arrangement for an elderly person who lacks the ability to fast.
